With the war in the Ukraine and the EU’s policy and regulatory response to it, the EU became overnight a major importer of LNG. In order to be able to bring the required volumes of LNG to the EU, significant investments in new infrastructure (terminals and pipelines) have become necessary. At the same time, these additional imports and the infrastructure necessary to receive it have to be accommodated with energy transition goals. I will be discussing what will be needed to secure the required volumes of LNG for the EU and how to finance the necessary new infrastructure and to at the same time align these imports and investments as good as possible with energy transition goals with an expert panel at the European Gas Conference of the Energy Council in Vienna on March 27th, 2023.
