The EU’s decision to replace substantial volumes of long-term Russian natural gas supplies to the EU with natural gas from alternative suppliers and with LNG as a consequence of the war in the Ukraine opened up a market which was to a great extent foreclosed until comparable supply volumes will no longer be needed if energy transition goals are met. This sudden and unexpected market opening provides unexpected opportunities but also comes with foreseeable risks due to the apparent conflicts with energy transition and ESG risks.
